The pandemic affects all of us, but those who were economically and food insecure before the shutdown are suffering the most from its effects. These communities bear a disproportionate share of cases, deaths, and associated health and financial problems.
A healthy diet is critical to strengthening the immune system of those infected and those who have been exposed to the virus, but outbreaks in densely populated communities are worsened when infected people or their families are forced to leave their homes day after day to secure the food they need.
The One-Week Box was designed with the needs of house-bound Covid19 patients and their families in mind. For $50—less than the Official USDA Low Cost Weekly Food Plan—the Box can meet the food needs of an adult for a full week
(https://fns-prod.azureedge.net/sites/default/files/media/file/CostofFoodMar2020.pdf).
With the special circumstances of the infirm and their families in mind, the box contains a mix of products requiring preparation and products that are ready to eat, including a quart of homemade chicken soup.
While the contents of the boxes will vary based on product availability, all versions will comprise 14,000-16,000 calories (equivalent to 21 meals for a typical adult) and feature whole foods with complete and balanced nutritional content. The boxes feature foods high in vitamin C and other nutrients with a strong connection to immune system health, including fruits and vegetables; vegetable and animal proteins (including some dairy); and whole grains (rice, oatmeal, cereal, tortillas, pasta).
The price includes socially distanced, safe delivery.
